vagrancy era

I haven’t been so clear about my recent life changes. Since I’m on my way to the airport, I thought I would now clarify:

I’ve been living with different friends for the past six months, and tonight I am moving to Berlin, Germany to take a job as a research scientist with EIT-ICT in partnership with Deutsche Telekom Labs. I am moving alone. I will be living with my friend in East Berlin. Do I speak German? No, not really, but the job is in English. Didn’t I take 5 or 6 German classes over the past few years? Yes, but I don’t remember much. I’m hoping it’ll come back to me. Why am I so obsessed with Berlin? It’s a cool, affordable city with a lot of art/media/mobile/tech stuff going on, and it’s a great era to be there. Also the pastries are excellent. When will I be back? I’m on contract through the end of the year. Will I return to Boston? Ha! I hope not. I plan to live in New York City, unless I am getting wildly successful in Berlin.

Meanwhile, I will still be connected to MIT as a CMS research affiliate, and might teach or do research again here (re: HCI) in future. I am very grateful for everything MIT has done for me, and its lovely employees and students and faculty. Special shout-out to CMS, to the Glass Lab, and to the Pottery Studio.

I think that is all for now. Email me if you don’t have my new contact information and would like it. Goodbye!

my pseudo brother, J., is about to finish his last semester of college and embark on a prosperous political/legal career. tonight his mom made a huge and lovely dinner for us both. tomorrow we head to various cities, and I hitch a ride.

this is the mirror where, at ages 10 and 21, respectively, we choreographed dances to britney spears’ songs.

I’ve had a lot of support from great friends all season. In no particular order, and no longer anonymized with initials, I would like to thank Talia, Melissa, Christine, and Mike & Lindsay for letting me stay with them at different times over the past season and a half. They deserve medals. Also Rosie for amazing legal help, Emily for translations, and Geoffrey, Beth, Mohan, Madeleine, Hayes, Abhi and Kate for other support and letting me city-hop on a consistent basis. In advance I’m thanking Mohan, Madeleine, Rosie & Abhi for supporting me if I fail in Germany or come back in a year with nothing. And of course a big thanks to my friend ATD in Berlin for letting me stay with her, always, and prepping a room for me in her beautiful apartment and helping me wade through the morass of German bureaucracy. Also to Shiva for connecting me with cool new friends in Berlin.

There are others I’ve left out. I apologize. I love you all. Just wanted to list the special people before I get all wrapped up in moving. Onward!

leaving in two weeks. my office is an exploded bomb of clothing and technology and bags of various sizes. so much still to do. leaving this city after 14.5 years! praise be to god.
