Live long and prosper, don’t get shot in the jungle, etc.

Last night I finally saw Star Trek. First time in a long time going to the movies alone, since all attempts to see it with friends/strangers failed. C’est la vie. I walked 20 minutes along the ocean to get to the cinema, bought some overpriced stuff at the outdoor mall, totally could not find the entrance to the theatre. Ate some M&Ms for dinner. I’ll skip ahead:

I really enjoyed the film. Having never been remotely interested in Star Trek before (except the Next Generation, during high school, because of my unrequited crush on Patrick Stewart) or sci-fi in general (unless X-files counts, because of my unrequited crush on David Duchovny), I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy this movie, especially the acting. I think Zachary Quinto was the best — quite a talented actor. Kirk was a little annoying, but maybe that was his character, or the script.

In nonfiction news, my camera will not be released from the ugly grips of Peruvian customs officials until supposedly late tomorrow, a full ten days after arriving in Lima. If this ends up being true, M. and I leave for the Amazon tomorrow night or Wednesday. Roads were closed because of the vigilante tribes shooting down police helicopters in Junín with drug dealer guns, or something, in protest of a pretty horrible and exploitative law the legislature has passed to sell off chunks of the jungle to the highest bidders. So, the tentative plan is to take an 8-hour bus to Huancayo, very high up in the Andes, and then a 9-hour bus to Satipo, near Pangoa. And then turn around after two days and come back by Sunday. I have a feeling this trip will be lots of buses and taxis and God knows what else. No telling whether these villages even have working internet.

Part of me just wants to go to Huancayo and then south to Huancavelica, where there are definitely internet success stories that we’ve already heard of. Pangoa is just so freaking far away, and M. needs to be back here by Monday, which is the dilemma. I think I just exploded, and pieces of me have scattered all over Miraflores. Ugh.
